Neurofeedback and Bi-polar Disorder: Case Study

Matthew, a forty-five year old attorney with two adult children diagnosed with having bipolar disorder, presented with complaints of a “mind that was never quiet”, difficulties with insomnia, chronic fatigue and a great deal of “stress”. He expressed frustration from his inability to refrain from analyzing everything he experienced, and was unable to sufficiently relax and enjoy recreational activities such as viewing a movie or taking a vacation. Matthew also expressed an inability to stop thinking about work-related issues.

Matthew underwent approximately seventy-five biofeedback sessions, specifically catered to decrease his mini al alpha activity, in order to provide him with a more homeostatic mental and physical condition. At the conclusion of the neurofeedback sessions, Matthew exhibited dramatic improvements in his overall psychological state. Matthew transformed from an individual with a “manic mind” who reported being “stressed out” and “at the end of his rope”, to someone who exhibited gentleness, calmness, and a very substantial awareness of himself and his mental state. Matthew also reports no longer suffering from insomnia, chronic fatigue, and uncontrollable thought patterns of years past.
